The seminar / talk by Prof. Dr. Samina Khalil on the topic of ‘Sustainable Development and Climate Change Impacts – Nexus: Synergies and Trade-Offs and Workshop on, ` Imperatives of Road to Climate Action and Resilience to Pakistan’ for research students, were held at the AERC (Under the auspices of Center for Sustainable Development Goals, AERC), University of Karachi, on June 25 and June 27, 2024 respectively.
The talk was focused on the global issue of climate change impacts that are part of the larger question of how complex social, economic, and environmental subsystems interact and shape prospects for sustainable development. The multiple links of the socio economic sectors and the disastrous impacts of climate change. Economic development affects ecosystem balance and, in turn, is affected by the state of the ecosystem. Poverty can be both a result and a cause of environmental degradation. Material- and energy-intensive lifestyles and continued high levels of consumption supported by non-renewable resources, as well as rapid population growth are not likely to be consistent with sustainable development paths.
Similarly, extreme socio-economic inequality within communities and between nations may undermine the social cohesion that would promote sustainability and make policy responses more effective. At the same time, socio-economic and technology policy decisions made for non-climate-related reasons have significant implications for climate policy and climate change impacts, as well as for other environmental issues. In addition, critical impact thresholds, and vulnerability to climate change impacts, are directly connected to environmental, social and economic conditions, and institutional capacity.
A workshop on ‘Imperatives of Road to Climate Action and Resilience to Pakistan’ Pakistan aimed at explaining the research students that how and why we are facing a defining moment in terms of devastation and destruction that has made the whole world take climate change impacts more seriously and consider it as our existential matter.
The objective of the workshop was to create awareness among research students about global and local challenges that are manifested in the context of climate change.
The vital question as to, how Pakistan can proactively address climate risks was part of workshop discussion. It is imperative that the policy makers approach to take climate change impacts holistically is embedding adaptation strategies in its development and planning frameworks. Implementation of the national adaptation policies therefore be a highly complex process.
In order to implement adaptation policy effectively, it is crucial to ensure the coherence and integration of adaptation considerations across diverse sectors and multiple government agencies and tiers. It is essential to establish coordination and governance mechanisms at all levels of government (federal, provincial and local), including ministries, departments, agencies, and sectors.
To maximize impact, it is crucial to prioritize activities based on specific vulnerabilities, risks, and adaptation needs while considering their proper sequencing. The workshop intended to elucidate that clear definition of objectives, identification of activities, resource allocation, and realistic timelines for implementation of policies are vital aspects of its success.
Additionally, establishing national and sub-national monitoring and evaluation (M&E) mechanisms will support progress tracking, assess the effectiveness of adaptation actions, and ensure accountability. A comprehensive and inclusive communications strategy needs to be developed to deliver tailored messages through suitable channels to reach audiences locally, nationally, and globally.
