M.PHIL. :   PART - I  (MAS)

   COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The Part-I of M.Phil. programme extends over four quarters of three months each. Following Compulsory and Optional courses are offered.

1st   Quarter: (March to June 2005) COMPULSORY

Note: Students are entitled to audit additional courses in the 4th quarter with the permission of Incharge, Graduate Studies Programme and the concerned teacher.

 

   ATTENDANCE

i)        The attendance of students admitted in the AERC will be considered from the 1st day of the first quarter not from the date of admission.  

ii)       If a student fails to attend classes for two weeks continuously after the commencement of the first quarter, his/her admission will stand cancelled automatically without any notice.  

iii)      If a student is unable to attend classes continuously for 10 days or more without informing the Incharge, GSP (in writing), his/her admission will also be stand cancelled. In case of illness or other similar situation, application along with a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner duly verified by the Senior Medical Officer of the University must be submitted within two days after the incident.  

iv)      Only those students are allowed to sit in the final examinations, in each quarter, who have a cumulative aggregate attendance of at least 75% in that particular quarter.  

v)       If a student has been ill and provides a medical certificate he/she will be allowed to sit in the final examinations only if he/she has about 50% attendance in that particular quarter.

   CONTINUATION OF PROGRAMME

i)        All those students who were sick and presented medical evidence may be granted permission to continue the programme if they desire. However, his/her stipend will not be released for the quarters for which they are short of attendance.  

ii)       All course work has to be completed within two academic years failing which the enrollment as M.Phil candidate may stand cancel.

   GRADING OF COURSE WORK

i)            The highest grade is A+ and the lowest is D.  An F is a failure.  The concerned instructor has complete freedom to assign different weights to different exams, i.e., mid-term(s), final exam, assignments etc. Letter grades relate to prescribed numerical points*. The number of mid-term exams, quizzes and assignments will also be decided by the concerned instructor.  

ii)            Successful completion of the entire course work requires an overall average of B grade.  Which means earning a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Ratio (CGPR) of 3 as per prescribed points scheme, in all the courses, and at least a D in each course*.  Students with an average Grade of less than B on the course work will have to repeat one or more courses in which he/she has obtained less than a B grade.  The courses selected for this purpose will have to be approved by the Incharge, Graduate Studies Programme (GSP).  

iii)           No quiz/exam can be postponed without the consent of the instructor.  Any foreseeable event must be discussed in advance with the instructor and prior permission be obtained, otherwise no credit shall be given for the missed quiz/exam.  A final exam can be postponed only by the instructor.  All postponed final exams must be given within one week of the date on which the exams were scheduled. Under conditions beyond control, permission for postponement by more than one week may be granted by the concerned instructor.

  FEE and Fellowship

 

i)          All candidates joining the programme will be required to pay tuition fee.  Selected candidates will be exempted from paying tuition fee and may be eligible for a fellowship upto Rs.1500/= per month depending on their academic performance and financial needs.  Out of station candidates may be provided an additional allowance.  

ii)       Tuition fee will be Rs.1,000/- per month during the first year payable to the AERC at the beginning of each month.  

iii)      The above fee is in addition to the approximately registration fee of Rs. 7,500/- payable in lump sum to the University of Karachi at the time of Provisional Admission.  

iv)      Only few students will be eligible for a stipend. They may be exempted from paying the tuition fee and/or may be eligible for out of station allowance (only for out of Karachi students).  

v)       The award of fellowship will be need based. However students doing exceptionally well in the first quarter may be considered for fellowships in the second quarter. The continuation of the fellowship will be dependent on continuously exceptional academic performance and may be discontinued at any time.  

vi)      The AERC reserves the right to select any candidate for a fellowship and is not obliged to present the selection criteria to the candidate. All information relating to the candidates financial eligibility will be highly confidential and AERC will not be required to make this available to anyone outside the AERC.  

vii)     For continued payment of fellowship a candidate has to be a full-time resident student at the AERC. He/she must have a cumulative aggregate attendance of at least 90 percent. Relaxation in this regard can only be made by the Incharge, Graduate Studies Programme in consultation with the concerned instructor.

viii)       If a student does not get an average of `C' in all four courses of a quarter, his/her stipend would be discontinued and will be released until he/she gets a cumulative average of `C' in the next quarter.

 

  EMPLOYMENT STATUS

All the selected candidates have to submit an affidavit for non-employment. Incase if any candidate is in service (public/private), he/she must submit two years leave letter from the respective employer prior to join the MAS / M.Phil programme. Devoid this admission would liable to be cancelled.

                            A- =  3.50        B- =  2.75        C- =  2.00
